Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport welcomed its first passengers on 25 October 2026, opening a new chapter in Australia’s aviation story.

For ASG, the milestone also marks an opportunity to celebrate our contribution to this landmark development. We supplied internal architectural glass for the project, including a featured specification of 17.52mm clear heat-strengthened acoustic laminated glass incorporating Eastman Saflex acoustic interlayer technology.

It is a contribution grounded in a practical design challenge: helping busy public spaces feel open and connected while supporting acoustic separation.

Architecture Built Around Connection

The terminal’s architectural concept was developed by Zaha Hadid Architects and COX Architecture, with detailed design and delivery led by Woods Bagot and construction by Multiplex.

Flowing forms, warm materials and generous natural light create a welcoming setting for passengers moving through the terminal.

Within this architectural environment, internal glass helps preserve sightlines and visual continuity. It allows spaces to remain connected while accommodating the different activities and performance requirements of a major transport hub.

Balancing Openness and Acoustic Separation

Airports are places of constant activity. Conversations, announcements and passenger movement all contribute to a complex acoustic environment.

Where separation between spaces is required, the choice of glazing becomes an important part of the overall design.

Acoustic laminated glass incorporates a specialised interlayer designed to improve sound insulation. This enables designers to address sound transmission through the glazing while retaining the transparency that makes glass valuable in open interiors.

For Western Sydney International Airport, the featured 17.52mm composition brings these priorities together: clear views, acoustic performance and a heat-strengthened laminated construction.

ASG’s Featured Glass Specification

The project’s featured VG6 specification comprises 17.52mm clear heat-strengthened acoustic laminated glass, incorporating Eastman Saflex acoustic interlayer technology.

Each aspect of the composition serves a purpose:

  • Clear glass maintains visual connections between spaces.
  • Acoustic interlayer technology supports sound insulation through the glazing.
  • Heat-strengthened glass provides greater strength than equivalent annealed glass.
  • Laminated construction helps retain glass fragments following breakage.

The performance of an installed glazing system also depends on panel dimensions, framing, seals, connections and the surrounding construction. Glass selection therefore forms part of a coordinated approach to the project’s requirements.

Materials That Support the Passenger Experience

Passengers experience a terminal as a whole: its light, spaces, movement and atmosphere.

Individual material choices help shape that experience. Internal glass can create boundaries without closing off views, maintaining a sense of openness while supporting the functions of adjoining spaces.

ASG’s involvement in Western Sydney International Airport reflects the value of matching architectural glass to its intended application, supporting the design vision through materials suited to the demands of the building.
