Project Overview
The Newcastle Airport Expansion represents one of the most significant transport infrastructure projects currently delivered within regional Australia.
Designed by Cox Architecture, the terminal expansion has been developed to support international operations, larger aircraft movements and future passenger growth throughout the Hunter Region.
ASG supplied the project's architectural glazing package, incorporating large-format double laminated insulating glass units, solar control low-e coatings and specialised privacy glazing systems.

Designing for Performance
Airport projects create unique performance requirements.
Façade glazing must simultaneously address:
• Solar heat gain
• Passenger comfort
• Security requirements
• Acoustic performance
• Visual transparency
• Long-term durability
Meeting these requirements becomes increasingly complex when glazing dimensions approach six metres in height.
Double Laminated IGUs
The primary façade incorporated:
13.52mm Cool Shade 57-1 HS Lam + 20mm Argon + 13.52mm Clear HS Lam
and
17.52mm Cool Shade 57-1 HS Lam + 20mm Argon + 17.52mm Clear HS Lam
with shaped and oversized configurations utilised throughout the project.
The laminated construction provided enhanced safety performance while allowing large unsupported glazed areas throughout the terminal façade.
Large-format entrance glazing integrated into the terminal façade.
Thermal Performance Outcomes
The Cool Shade 57-1 low-e system delivered:
|
Performance Metric |
Result |
|
Visible Light Transmission |
Up to 51% |
|
U-Value |
Down to 1.40 W/m²K |
|
SHGC |
Down to 0.27 |
These values enabled daylight penetration while significantly reducing solar heat gain and operational energy loads.
Passenger Experience and Privacy
Within the arrivals areas, laminated glazing incorporating Vanceva Arctic Snow white translucent interlayers was used to create visual privacy while maintaining natural daylight transmission.
This allowed passenger processing areas to remain bright and welcoming without compromising operational requirements.
Natural daylight contributes to a bright and comfortable passenger environment.
Supporting Regional Infrastructure Growth
The completed terminal positions Newcastle Airport as a major international gateway for the Hunter Region and broader Northern NSW market.
The project demonstrates how carefully engineered glazing systems can contribute to operational efficiency, passenger comfort and architectural identity simultaneously.
For ASG, Newcastle Airport represents another example of delivering complex, high-performance glazing solutions across critical infrastructure environments where performance requirements extend well beyond the glass itself.
