The Queenscliff Ferry Terminal on Wadawurrung Country is more than a gateway between Queenscliff and Sorrento—it’s a striking piece of architecture that brings together heritage, sustainability, and modern coastal design. Designed by F2 Architecture and constructed by Kane Constructions, the new terminal was built to improve functionality while creating a visual icon along Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula.

At the heart of its façade performance is ASG Super S3 on Clear Low-E DGU, a glazing solution that plays a powerful role in both the visual identity and environmental performance of the building.

A Glass That Reflects the Bay’s Beauty—and Its Heat

ASG Super S3 is a high-performance Low-E glass that balances light transmission and thermal control with a clean, neutral aesthetic. With a Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) of 51%, it brings ample daylight into the terminal while controlling glare and enhancing passenger comfort. The glass also offers a U-value of 1.55 (with Argon), ensuring excellent insulation in an exposed coastal environment, and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.37, which helps reduce solar heat load—a key consideration for glass-heavy façades facing Port Phillip Bay.

Designed for Views, Built for Performance

The building’s flowing roofline and sweeping forms echo the historic lifeboat sheds of the region, while the extensive glazing—enabled by Super S3—delivers the panoramic experience F2 Architecture envisioned. With Super S3’s neutral clarity, passengers enjoy uninterrupted views of the bay, ferries, and sky, while the interior remains protected from temperature extremes and excessive UV exposure.

But this is not just about the view. The performance characteristics of ASG Super S3 contribute to long-term operational efficiency, helping reduce the terminal’s cooling demand during summer months, while maintaining warmth on colder days—a smart, passive solution suited to Victoria’s varying coastal climate.

Sustainability Meets Architectural Impact

By choosing ASG Super S3, the design team embraced a product that supports both form and function. The glass allowed for large spans of transparent façade without compromising on energy efficiency, aligning perfectly with the project’s sustainability goals.

In a structure where first impressions matter—from daily commuters to tourists—the clarity, comfort, and colour neutrality of ASG Super S3 creates an inviting and memorable experience. It brings the outside in, without letting the harsh elements follow.
