Float glass is manufactured by floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin. This process results in a perfectly smooth and uniform surface, making float glass an ideal choice for various applications in architecture, automotive, and other industries. The glass produced through this method is characterized by its clarity, transparency, and absence of distortions or imperfections.
Float glass is typically made by the following processes:
Melting Raw Materials: The process begins with the melting of raw materials, including silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and other additives, in a furnace. The high temperatures cause these materials to melt and form molten glass.
Formation of the Glass Ribbon: The molten glass is then carefully poured onto a bath of molten tin. Tin has a lower melting point than glass, and the two substances do not mix. As the molten glass spreads across the surface of the tin, it forms a continuous and uniform sheet known as the glass ribbon.
Floating on Tin: The glass ribbon floats on the molten tin because it is less dense than the tin below. This floating process allows the glass to attain a consistent thickness and a remarkably smooth surface.
Cooling and Annealing: As the glass ribbon moves along the tin bath, it gradually cools. The controlled cooling process, known as annealing, helps relieve internal stresses in the glass and ensures uniform thickness. This step is crucial for enhancing the overall strength and durability of the glass.
Cutting and Inspection: Once the glass ribbon has solidified, it is carefully cut into sheets of the desired size. These sheets are then inspected for any defects, ensuring that the final product meets stringent quality standards.
Standard thicknesses (mm): 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0, 10.0, 12.0, 15.0, 19.0
Standard sheets of float glass are 2440 x 3660. Jumbo sized sheets can be available up to 3300 x 6000. Larger sheets may be available subject to custom order.
